“The Power and the Prize”
En skummel skikkelse får øje på Silver Surfers gøren og laden på jorden. Surferen har bl. a. været på hospitalet, på besøg hos den pige han reddede fra Brotherhood of Badoon i sidste nr. Men som sædvanligt bliver han misforstået, angrebet , frygtet og udsat for patetisk jordbo-agtig smålighed. Faktisk er han ved at tabe tålmodigheden med menneskehedens stupide had og mistro, til alt der er fremmed. Den skumle skikkelse der har luret på Surferen, viser sig at være ingen ringere end Mephisto – den inter-dimensionale inferno-dæmon, med eget personlige helvede og millioner af sjæle til sin rådighed.
Mephisto læser straks hvad der er i Surferens hjerte og overtaler Shalla-Bal, der befinder sig på Zenn-La, til at hoppe ind i et rumskib og flyve mod jorden. Og hvad gør jordboerne, jo de affyrer selvfølgelig atomvåben mod rumskibet, da det nærmer sig jorden. Better safe than sorry.
Surferen får dog reddet Shalla ud men vupti ! – så stjæler Mephisto hende for næsen af ham og tager hende med til sin helvedes-dimension.
Mephisto ser i Surferen en værdig modstander, der står for alt hvad han afskyr – godhed, renhed, ærlighed og en ædel karakter. Faktisk besidder Surferen så stor godhed, at Mephisto næsten ikke kan bære det. Til Mephistos store overraskelse, er Surferen i stand til at følge efter ham, til hans dimesion, det forvirrer ham en del. Mephisto forsøger at fordærve Surferen med så jordiske ting som penge, magt og sex – men intet bider på ham. Til sidst laver den almægtige Mephisto, Surferen om til en bar tanke i sit eget sind, men han kan ikke holde ud at have Surferen, med al hans ækle godhed inden for panden og smider ham ud af sit hoved igen. Mephisto narres til sidst ved, at han lokkes til at true Surferen med adskillelse fra Shalla Bal forevigt, da han vil sende hende hjem til Zenn-La, hvis Surferen ikke adlyder. Shalla Bal vælger selv at tage hjem og Mephisto må se sig besejret.

Mand finder i alien rumskib en bog, der er en manual til invasion af jorden. Mand kan ikke finde nogen der vil tro ham, før han finder en professor som han viser bogen. Professor regner ud at mand er alien med hukommelsestab, ellers ville han ikke have kunnet læse bogen, der er skrevet på aliensk. Invasionen var ham, men nu er den fejlet.

Det her er faktisk første gang man møder Mephisto, en figur jeg holder uendeligt meget af, i sær i Buscemas fantastiske version. Han er så sprængfyldt med mytologi og kosmisk prægnans, at man næsten dåner over de store halv og helsides splashes. Og historien er vidunderlig i al sin arketypiske narrativitet, og man efterlades villende mere og med en sult efter at få mere at vide, om den diabolske helvedesdæmon Mephisto.
Heldigvis (Spoiler!) dukker han snart op igen.
Watcher historien er en genfortælling fra Amazing Adult Fantasy #7 fra 1962. En sjov lille Outer Limits fortælling, effektiv i al sin enkelhed og ikke noget at skrive lange breve hjem om.
