“The Dawn of the Doomsday Man!”
For at kunne modstå eventuelle fjender fra rummet, har verdens ledere i deres visdom kreeret en Doomsday Man. En robot-kriger-døds-maskine, af så vanvittig styrke, at den simpelthen er for farlig at have gående rundt.
De finder en øde ø og bygger en stor kapsel om den og ødelægger låsen. Bingo. Problem solved.
Indtil Doomsday Man begynder at røre på sig. Det skaber nogle flukturelle forskydelse i de geotektoniske overfladeflader, og man begynder at bliver bekymret i United Nation, hvor alle landene skændes om hvad man skal gøre. Surferen læser i avisen om problemet og flyver fluks til U.N. og tilbyder sin hjælp. Sammen med robottens opfinder Dr. Kronton, tager Surferen til den øde ø, for at se på sagerne. Surferen får dem ind i kapslen og ganske rigtigt er Doomsday Man vågnet og ikke nok med det, man har i kaplen også begravet en cobolt bombe (der jo i teorien kan udslette ALT liv på jorden for evigt), som Doomsday Man nu har fået fat i. Robotten angriber, Silver Surfer narrer den til at skyde et hul ind til jordens krene, som han så skubber ham ned i. Men det viser sig nu at det er Dr. Kronton der har styret Doomsday Man hele tiden, for at bruge den som våben mod menneskeheden og tjene nogle kroner på afpresning, I det Doomsday Man falder, rækker Dr. Kronton ud efter den, men bliver ramt af robottens arm og dør. I mens er Surferen fjøjet så langt ud i rummet han kan komme for Galactus´ barriere, og har detoneret cobolt bomben,
Vil menneskeheden nu endelig takke Silver Surfer for sin ædle dåd?
Eller vil en tåre tung som eoner af kosmisk lys, samle sig i Surferens øje og som en sten, der får evigt må flyttes af en Prometheus, trille ned over de sølvglinsende kinder, for kun at blive samlet op af en knugende hånd, der i forvivlelse og mismod, dækker for udsynes til en verden af dårskab og svig? Okay Wow! .. bare Wow! Bare indledningssekvensen er helt fantastisk. Surferen i sine jordiske gevandte, frakke, hat og hansker, der slendrer rundt i byen og tager toget og sætter sig ved siden af en hippie, som synes han er for “far out” med sin hvide ansigts-gimmick, og flytter sig bort. Det hele er så lækkert og overlegent tegnet og farvelagt, at man bare ønsker at der intet sker, men at vi bare kan følge Surferen rundt på opdagelse i et 70´ernes New York. Afslutningsbilledet ligeså. Surferens strålende nobillitet, som han vender hovedet mod dem der igen tror, at han er deres fjende, efter han har reddet dem for gud ved hvilken gang. At han som en blanding af Clint Eastwood og Kristus blot vandrer bort, med en tåre i øjnene (okay det har Clint aldrig gjort). Man forstår tegneserielæsere som Mark Waid, Millar, Ellis etc., som voksede op med de her serier, har tænkt, hvad nu hvis Surferen fik nok, hvad nu hvis han begyndte, at straffe verden for den ondskab? Da disse serieskabere fik muligheden for det, skabte de alle serier over skabelonen: Overmenneskelige og godhjertede kræfter – vender sig mod mennskeheden. Man forstår dem godt. Men tænker man videre er det præcist det, der gør Surferen til den Kristus-allegori, han så tit har fået skudt i skoene. Han giver os et teodicé-problem (selvom Surferen selfølgelig ikke er almægtig), for hvad ville der ske, hvis den almægtige monoteistiske gud fra vores traditioner, besluttede sig for at straffe os for vores ugerninger? Men så ville han jo kun straffe de syndige? Men hvem er det, er jo det spørgsmål Kristus stiller. Kast den første sten. Surferen græder for hele menneskeheden.
Doomsday Man bliver senere en fliitig fjende af Ms. Marvel og Avengers.
